The St. Paul Pioneer Press says it finalized a lease to move to the River Park Plaza building across the Mississippi River from downtown.

reported that this deal was in the works last month. The paper sold its building on Friday.

The Pioneer Press says it plans to lease an entire floor of the River Park Plaza office building plus additional space for a data center and other operations. The newspaper will make the move in late 2015 or early 2016.

The new offices will be designed to support the Pioneer Press' emphasis on its digital product, which is similar to what the Star Tribune said when it sold its historic downtown Minneapolis office building and relocated to new office space.

A Sioux Falls, S.D., developer purchased the Pioneer Press headquarters building for $3.5 million and plans to redevelop it into 150 to 168 apartments.
